The Meaning of Life

Among the columns of the mosque, near the mihrab, walking Averroes opening up between the multitude of his disciples who torment him with questions.

Voices: Master Ibn Rushd! Master Ibn Rushd! ...

Averroes: ... medicine, astronomy and other sciences ... I always ask me to explain what Aristotle said about the knowledge of earthly things, but I never ever ask about the ultimate questions: where we come from , where we go, the creation and especially the purpose and meaning of life and history.

Disciple: Master, today ...

Averroes: Today, as always, our philosophy it would not help if you do not know connect these three things that I have tried to gather in my book "The harmony between science and religion." A science based on experience and logic needed to discover the causes of the phenomena ... A wisdom to reflect on the purpose of all scientific research in order to help make our life more beautiful ... a revelation that of our Qur'an since only through revelation will be allowed to know the ultimate ends of our lives and history.

Woman: And for us women ...?

Averroes: Women have the same ultimate ends of man ... The Quran distinguishes only between those men and women who seek God's law and those who do not care about it: There is no hierarchy among human beings ... While you men see women as plants that do not seek it for their fruits, for procreation, the rest is in the converted. These are your morals that have nothing to do with Islam.

Disciple: And our King? ...

Averroes: The Prophet taught us that there is no more holy war that telling the truth to a powerful unfair. The tyrant is the slave of men, is given to their passions by his courtiers, and their own fears for fear of his own people.

Disciple: What then is the best company?

Averroes: The one where you will give to every woman, every child and every man the means to develop all the possibilities that God has given them.

Disciple: And what power can fix it?

Averroes: This is not a theocracy like that of the Christians of Europe, a religious power. God - the Koran says - has breathed into man His spirit. Let's do really live in every man!

Disciple: What are the conditions imposed by such society?

Averroes: It will be a free society, and so pleasing to God if anyone will act with the fear of his prince, nor fear of hell, nor the desire of a reward, a courtesan or a paradise . When no one will ever say "this is mine."

Disciple: Master, tell us other things ...

Averroes: Enough with the questions. First, I am not a teacher. God is the only teacher, and his teaching is more frequent in the Qur'an that we must make the effort to reflect on their own.

Notes

Throughout human history there have been times when people have lit fires and flutes, whose light and music still guides us. The time, around 1150, is the magic of peaceful and fruitful sharing of part of Spain, Andalusia (Al-Andalus), by Jews, Muslims and Christians, and the person is Ibn Rushd, beacon known in Latin as Averroes. Philosopher, theologian, lawyer, translator, physician, astronomer, physicist, mathematician, an extraordinary person who made the integration between different cultures, religions and disciplines, one of the strengths of his thought. While Al-Andalus flourished in art, commerce, science and religion, Christian Europe was plunged into the darkness of reason, which would eventually lead to one of the more shameful human history: the Holy Inquisition. Extremism, as history teaches on time, did not lead to calamities and misfortunes, on the contrary, tolerance and openness have always improved pushing humanity towards God or towards the stars. Yet the rejection of different el'arroccamento on its privileges, yet appear to be the best means of consensus, the exploitation of fear as a system of power.
Today in our country shepherds and sheep abound, what is lacking is the people themselves pastors simply, the final exhortation of Averroes, is magnificent, timeless.
Last spring in Cordoba, I walked too in the same places, followed by his disciples, walked Averroes, and I felt myself his pupil. For a moment, a colonnade between Arab and a hedge of myrtle, I breathed its very air.
